The victim, a 42 year old man from the Nelson area, was walking along Charles Street, Nelson around 11:45pm, when a dark coloured saloon vehicle knocked him over.


The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and continued to travel down Charles Street towards Nelson Town Centre.


Detective Sergeant Charlie Haynes from Pennine CID is appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.


"I am appealing for anybody with any information regarding this incident to contact Pennine CID as a matter of urgency. I am confident that somebody would have heard or seen this incident. The collision happened on Charles Street close to the junction with Reedyford Road. There are a number of CCTV cameras in this area which detectives are in the process of examining.


"The victim has been left with serious injuries including a broken leg bone and is extremely shaken by this ordeal.


"I am also directly appealing for the driver to contact me. The driver would have been aware of the collision and may be able to offer an explanation as to why he had failed to stop. He should do the right thing and come forward as soon as possible."
